Your catalog, not your storefront, is the bottleneck

Chadha Labs

The common mistake

When online sales stall, the first instinct is a redesign. New theme, new photos, faster pages. Sometimes that helps. In auto parts it rarely fixes the real problem, because the real problem sits underneath the site.

Why the catalog decides everything

A shopper buying a part needs one answer: will this fit my vehicle? That answer comes from fitment data: which year, make, model, engine and trim a part fits, with the right qualifiers. If that data is missing or wrong:

  • Search can't find the part for the shopper's vehicle.
  • Marketplaces reject the listing or bury it.
  • The part ships, doesn't fit, and comes back as a return.

None of that is fixed by a nicer homepage.

What a healthy catalog looks like

  • Complete fitment for every part that has it, using the industry standards (ACES for fitment, PIES for product attributes).
  • Clean attributes: brand, part type, dimensions and images, consistent across every product.
  • One source of truth that the store, the marketplaces and the feeds all read from.
  • A way to measure it: what's missing, what's invalid, what's duplicated.

Where AI actually helps

AI is very good at the grinding work: reading messy supplier spreadsheets, mapping columns, spotting missing qualifiers and invalid vehicle combinations, and drafting attributes for a person to approve. It isn't a substitute for the standards or for someone who knows the parts. It's an accelerant on top of both.

This is why eStore is built around fitment first. The storefront matters, but it only works as well as the data feeding it.

What we'd do again

  • Measure catalog health before spending anything on a redesign.
  • Let AI do the first pass on messy supplier data, with a person approving the result.

What we'd skip

  • Putting fitment in description text where search and marketplaces can't use it.
  • Maintaining separate copies of the catalog for each channel.
